Healthy Smiles from the Start

The Alliance of the American Dental Association (AADA), together with the American Dental Association (ADA) and Henry Schein Cares (HSC), launched Healthy Smiles from the Start, a new multifaceted prenatal and postnatal dental health care education program for mothers and caregivers of newborns. Created to address the nation's growing dental health issues during pregnancy and throughout early childhood, Healthy Smiles from the Start is engaging and helpful information - available in English and Spanish - about how and why to make mouth healthy habits a priority for everyone in the family.

This toolkit has been tailor made to deliver to hospitals and birthing centers with existing prenatal classes. All you need to do is request that this material be added to their curriculum.

Free Kits will be available starting in early 2014 please contact our Central Office to be added to the waiting list.

Download the NCDHM Program Planning Guide and order the 2014 NCDHM Poster - you may also download the poster and print your own!

Give Kids a Smile

The American Dental Association created Give Kids A Smile in 2003 as a day for dentists to provide dental services to undeserved children. The program initially began as a one-day event, but has grown to local and national events year-round. Dentists volunteer their time, and services, to provide screenings, treatments and education to children throughout the United States. This year Give Kids a Smile Day will be celebrated on Friday, February 7, 2014!

Toothsavers

The Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives have released a new, free mobile gaming app, Toothsavers, in an effort to motivate parents and caregivers to take action to reduce their children's risk of oral disease. This interactive game makes toothbrushing fun by encouraging kids to save friendly fairy tale characters from the evil, cavity-creating sorceress who cast a wicked tooth-rotting spell on the kingdom. The goal of the game is to motivate children to save their own teeth by brushing their teeth two minutes, twice a day. Click here to watch a preview of Toothsavers.

Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives

The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives is a first‐of‐its‐kind national coalition of 35 leading dental health organizations, including the American Dental Association, Oral Health America and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. The goal of the national multimedia campaign, developed in partnership with
the Ad Council, is to teach parents and caregivers, as well as the children themselves, about the importance of oral health and the simple ways they can prevent oral disease.

Parents! Brushing your kids’ teeth for 2 minutes, 2 times a day

is what it takes to keep their mouths healthy. 2 minutes! Here are some fun videos

to make that time go by faster!

Help us get the word out by sharing this message with your friends, colleagues or patients using these customizable materials!

"Right from the Start"

The AADA National Dental Health Education program for 2010 was introduced at Conference 2010 in Tempe, AZ. We learned about the "Right from the Start" program from Dr. Ray Wagner, a pediatrician from Tucson, who developed the program in 2006 and uses it in his health care centers in El Rio, AZ.

Dr. Wagner shared the information about the alarming rate of early childhood caries (ECC) that is currently (2010) at 60% while in comparison childhood obesity 30% and childhood asthma 11%. He stumbled onto this little known fact after seeing how sick a little child can get after having an infected molar tooth. It made such an impact on him that he began his crusade and developed the "Right from the Start" program.

For your use are the following materials:

An El Rio Health Centers Action Plan for Maternal-Infant Oral Health Promotion in the First Year of Life

#1 The Pregnancy and Birth, #2 Age 4-9 months, #3 Age 8-12 months

"Improving Women's and Children's Oral Health"

An Educational Flip Chart

In addition to Dr. Wagner's program, the "Improving Women's and Children's Oral Health Flip Chart" was introduced. You can use this along with the "Right from the Start" materials.
